Why Do We Use Mouse Pads?

Mouse pads are a must when it comes to computer accessories. Everyone has and needs them. Most people just take it as a given, without really thinking about it. However, someone once asked "Why do we use mouse pads?". It's a great question, and one I would like to answer in this article.

First of all, they were originally designed as a necessity for the mouse. The original mice had a ball in them that was used to navigate the mouse. These days we have lasers, however, the older ones simply had balls. In order for the balls to work, there needed to be a solid surface, that was also easy to move across. Thus, the mouse pad was born. It was a gentle enough surface to move the mouse over, but at the same time, the surface was sturdy enough to produce enough friction for the ball to work.

Even though now we have moved on to more advanced mice with lasers, we still use pads. There are a variety of reasons for that, as well. One reason, is simply because it allows for a better surface. It's a smoother surface that makes the mouse easy to slide across.

Another reason is because of protecting other surfaces. Often computer desks have nice surfaces that people do not want to scratch. Some mice will scratch the desk. It is better just to have a small accessory (i.e.- a mouse pad) to prevent any damage to the desk.

Some people like using mouse pads for comfort. When using a mouse, it is very easy for your wrist, hand, or arm to get stiff or sore. Some are designed, especially for the purpose of preventing wrist/arm/hand/ discomfort. Some have special pads or gels in them. There are a variety of brands and styles available, most of which you can find online.

Finally, people enjoy using them because of the way they look. When they were first designed, they were designed simply as a piece of foam to help the mouse navigate. However, they have come a very long way. Now you can find mouse pads in a variety of different colors and designs. They can be personalized and customized to fit you and your lifestyle. You can find ones related to nature, sports, friends, family, cartoons, TV shows, etc. Finding a mouse pad is simply a task of thinking about what you enjoy, and then checking online.

In summary, mouse pads were originally designed with one use in mind. They were designed in order to create friction so the mouse could navigate. However, now they serve more of a purpose. They are not only there for the mouse, but also the computer user. They are there for comfort and for style.
