Desks are mainly used traditionally for writing and in the modern world this includes computer work. Most desks will have a combination of a table and storage in the form of drawers. The storage of a desk is usually used to hold office supplies and stationary items. Many times the drawers are set off to one side so that you can sit at the desk.
There are many different types of desks and not all of them are like the traditional desk of drawers and a table top. There are portable desks that are placed on your lap and do not contain any drawers. It is like a large square board that provides a hard surface. An armoire desk is built into a large wardrobe or armoire and does not have a table like surface. You can also have a combined desk where the people seated at the desk are facing each other.
Desks did not become very popular until paper and office work increased. This occurred during the 20th century where paper began to be widely used. Desks were made of heavy duty material like steel as the paper and typewriters were heavy. These desks tended to be in an L shape as a section was used to store the typewriter.
Then after the Second World War desks were used to get as many people in a small office area as possible as rent and office space was scarce. Desks were made so that several workers could be at each desk. These desks were made of materials like plywood and covered fiberboards to keep all the costs down.
One group of individuals that always use desks is students. There is a type of desks made just for students as these desks are created to fit in very small spaces, such as behind beds and in small dormitory rooms. These desks can have the drawers on either side or which hand you write with can dictate the best desk for you as a student to use.
An antique desk called a Bargueno desk was made during the Spanish renaissance during the 15th century. This was one of the first portable desks as its basic form was a box or chest. There was a side flap that could be opened and used a s a writing surface. The inside of the chest contain pigeon holes and drawers that could be used for storage. Then when you needed to move the desk you would fold back the side, close the lid and pick it up using the two handles on each side.
A special writing desk for ladies that was very popular in Europe was the Bonheur du jour. This desk was made in Paris in 1760 and was a more ornate and lighter desk. It was specifically used for writing and had very graceful lines. The back of the desk can turn into a small cabinet and there is a drawer which can be used to store writing tools, ornaments and other toiletries.
A desk that tends to be used in executive offices as a secondary work surface is a credenza desk. This desk is generally pushed up against a wall and can be used to hold items that are used infrequently. Many times a seated individual will use a rolling chair so that they can easily switch between desks.
