Looking at Various Writing Desks

Writing desks come in a surprisingly large variety of styles. This can refer to the type of wood used such as oak, cherry, walnut, mahogany, and pine or it can refer to something else like the style or make. A portable desk is obviously going to look much different and function differently than a corner L-shaped office desk or a writing secretary with pull down hutch. The number of pieces of very different furniture that all get grouped under the one title of "writing desk" is actually pretty amazing.

Historically, these started off simply as symbols of aristocracy or wealth. Not many people could afford an education, so simply having one of these pieces of furniture represented learning and paid education, which also alluded to wealth and aristocracy.

Times changed, and these desks changed quite often over time, as well. The one thing that remained the same no matter what time period or place is that the desk had to be functional. Some of these desks are very ornately decorated, and some of the antique models show delicate and detailed work and care, but no matter what the design, any writing desk was designed to be functional and usable for its time period.

Some, like the portable models, are becoming less and less common as technology (in this case the laptop computer) makes them impractical and obsolete. Others appear less often because the timber or other materials used to make them no longer exist. The history of these fascinating pieces of furniture is interesting, and one that continues to shift and change as time goes forward.
