Do you work out of your home? Are you finding it difficult to organize in a small space? Because of this change in the way we do business, we need to claim a place to work, and attention needs to be paid to stay organized.
If you can move your office into a spare room you have conquered some privacy as well as a place that you can close the door. If you are an empty nester and have two small bedrooms back to back, consider going to the added expense of taking out the wall between the rooms and creating an office/TV room. With just two people using the room there shouldn't be a problem with noise. Unused bedrooms work great for workspaces because they have closets and much storage can be created in them. If you have been trying to use the closets as they were intended, you will find yourself working with long shelves where everything shifts when one thing is removed for use. To tackle this problem put in a complete closet organizing system. There are professionals tha t can do this, or you can go to your hardware store and see what they have to offer for the person who wants to do it themselves. Organizers come in melamine or wire shelving. Avoid the wire as things just fall through. Consider working the shelving and cupboards around a legal filing cabinet in the closet. Leave enough room above the cabinet to use for additional printer paper storage etc.
If you use a laptop, you can work with a long table for your workspace, if not a computer desk works best. This keeps all the wires etc. out of site from the rest of the room if placed against a wall. A second legal file cabinet can work doing double duty in the room as a stand for electronics such as a printer, wifi etc. and also store files. Keep in mind that some things, such as pens etc.need to be at easy reach, so if you don't have drawer space, make sure you add things like small baskets or pencil cups. You can also get desk organizers that have lids on them. If they need to s it out in plain site, go for a faux leather look or fabrics, avoid pl astic.
The right desk chair is important. Realize that even if your office is in a tv room, that it needs to have a comfortable desk chair. Often times you are limited on the style and fabric for the chair, but you need to be practical as well as comfortable.
If you need more storage, consider buying kitchen cabinets from your local hardware store and combining them to look like a wall unit. Paint them if needed and add sleek modern hardware. Keep in mind that you may be hanging onto more paper copies then necessary. Consider having old files scanned and put on a CD. This is an inexpensive service that your local printing shop may offer. An external hard drive may be another way to keep the paper out of your office.
Keep in mind that even if no one else sees your office, you spend a lot of time in it. Make it as eye appealing and yet practical as possible.
