Want a Clean Desk? Here's How

An organized desk allows you to function efficiently, but a clean desk makes you feel good about sitting down to work at it.

In that sense, creating a clean desk is actually a rather subtle strategy for avoiding procrastination. The thought of sitting down to a messy desk is, for most people, less appealing than one that is free of clutter.

Do you want to tackle a messy desk? Follow these steps to turn it into a clean and clear workspace that is a pleasure to use.

Schedule it.

Creating a clean desk isn't usually something you should do on a whim. Put aside a chunk of time to do it. 30 to 60 minutes would make a real impact, but depending on the state of the surface and drawers, you may need less or longer.

Clear it.

Take everything off the desktop* and out of the drawers, then separate it all into reasonably logical piles that you can see. This is important so it's easier to decide what to do with it all.

*Whether or not you decide to include your computer in this depends on its portability and your satisfaction with its present position.

Clean it.

When it's clear, take the opportunity to give the surface a dust and polish. If you're cleaning your computer use an appropriate cleaning kit for the screen and keyboard.

Organize it.

What are the essential items that you need to function effectively? A computer, phone, planner and paper processing tray are probably the only things that deserve to stay on your desktop. Everything else? Keep it out of sight until it's needed.

Maintain it.

Once you've achieved a clean desk, keep it that way. Make it a habit to consistently putting everything back where it belongs after you've used it. At the end of each day, ensure your desktop is clean and clear, ready for the next time you use it.

The least glamorous but most important element of this 5 step process is the last one. What will defin e your desk functionality is the daily decision you make about puttin g things back where they belong.

That is the secret to keeping a clean desk.
