When selecting from the great array of modern desks available on the market today, it is important to consider numerous factors in making your decision. Buying a good quality desk is not an insignificant purchase for most people and so careful thought should be given to obvious, and not so obvious, aspects of the overall decision.
Firstly, what type of desk you are looking for, one for computer work only, one for writing on only, or one for these and other purposes? If you are buying one purely for writing purposes, how much surface space do you require based on the size and number of the books, files, folders, paper etc. that you will be using and referencing when you are writing. Many desks, old and modern, are designed for purposes other than writing, and are often not suited for writers or computer users. The surface area of the desk top should be big enough to contain all of the things you need easily and without unnecessary clutter.
If you require a compu ter desk, health experts recommend to buy one that is suited to your body type. By this, they mean that it should not cause you to move uncomfortably or have to strain in order to use it. Positioning of the keyboard should enable the palm of the hand to rest easily on the keyboard without straining the arms, hands or shoulders. Setting the height correctly, of preferably an ergonomic chair, needs to be taken into consideration when sitting at a computer desk.
Make sure that the desk is able to handle cables and wires for your computer and/or other electronic device. Many come with pre-cut holes for cables, although a cable hole can be made later by the DIY enthusiast if necessary.
Ensure that you measure the item prior to buying it. Make sure that it will fit through your doorways and hallways, and can be easily carried up your stairs if necessary. A light weight desk will be easier to move for cleaning behind, but is unlikely to be as sturdy as a solid timber d esk. With a heavy desk, the risk of injury increases from lifting it for cleaning purposes, or to relocate the item. So, give consideration to the frequency of having to move the desk and your susceptibility to back injury.
The more drawers a desk has, generally the heavier the desk will be. Drawers are great for storing papers, files, books, stationary items etc. Ensure the drawers are lockable for additional security, especially for laptops, iPods, mobile phones etc. A desk with drawers may cost more, but the extra storage and security can make the additional cost justifiable. Beware however that drawers will limit the space for seat and leg access under the desk top. Some desks with drawers can be so narrow that a swivel seat can catch the drawer section causing damage to the seat and/or corner of the drawer(s). Worse still a person's leg can catch the corner of the drawers damaging stockings, trousers, skirts etc. and/or injuring the limb!
